Brolga Girls take on the 7s State Champs

September saw the 3rd annual Queensland Rugby Union Girls Sevens Junior State Championships take place. With Townsville and the surrounding areas being represented by The Townsville and District Rugby Union Brolga's.

These championships are one of the top national competitions in the country with the Brolgas girls competing in the 'Horan and Bird Energy U15s' and the 'Well Hung Glass and Aluminium U17s' competitions. The 2 day event at Bond University saw 10 teams compete across the 2 age groups.

Both Brolga teams faced tough opposition which saw them each finish in 6th position in their respective categories. These results have set a great bench mark for the teams this year and will give them a very achievable target come next year as the standard continues to improve.

High Performance Manager for Queensland Sevens, Lachlan Parkinson explains how having highly competitive national competitions such as this can only be a good thing for the sport.

'In the last 3 years off the back of this, the numbers in the participation level have gone through the roof'

'This gives us the opportunity to look at selection for our Queensland youth teams for the National Champs at the end of the year.'

As participation numbers continue to grow across Australia, more girls at local and state levels can see a clearer pathway to playing elite Rugby. Congratulations to not only our Brolga's girls but to all of the competing teams in 2019 and we look forward to further success and growth in the years to come.
